Seo Tip For The Day- Page Titles

Ok, following on from the PageRank debate here’s some straightforward seo tips as promised.

If you don’t have your distinctly separate keywords inside the title tag on individual pages on your site you may not rank as higly as you would wish. The title tag has so much power, a swift alteration to it can boost your rankings in a few days, rather than just relying on building anchor text links with your desired keywords. Google, most times,  will rank a page higher if you have been building the same anchor text to it that is inside the title tag. Remember, you are not renaming the page name, but the title tag code that the search engine robots view.

So if you have multiple keywords, which you should, then pepper them across several pages on your site.

Give each page on your site a unique title and description. By having the same title on every one of your pages your asking Google to work out what your page is about. It is better to tell them by placing a unique title on every page. You’ll rank better for your keyword if you do.

Say if you are stubborn and pretty old school so you build your entire site around one keyword (business suicide). So your favourite business boosting keyword is little green spanners and you even manage to get the exact match domain : www.littlegreenspanners.co.uk.

You’re chuffed and you build a 10 page site because you know Google likes content. All the pages on your site have compelling content. You just want to get the word out about littlegreenspanners.co.uk. You’ve placed the most important content on your home page and padded out the rest of your site with filler content about green spanners.

You may want most of your visitors to land on your home page. But as Google sees you have the same title tag across every single page on your site- “Welcome to Little Green Spanners – Buy the sturdiest Little Green Spanners in town”, Google might decide that one of your supplementary pages should show up in the search results instead of the home page.

Although you might not think this is bad as at least a visitor will land on your website, that should not be your intended action. You should direct your visitors to the strongest page on your site that is most related to specific keywords. What if they landed on a page that had info on how to clean little green spanners? If their attention spans were low they might click off your site thinking this was a maintenance site when they actually wanted to buy a gleaming little green spanner set.

So by not directing Google and the potential browsers to your site you are missing the significance of using titles to direct the interests of both Google and surfers.

Duplicate Content Penalty

You probably won’t get a duplicate content penalty by having the same page title across evey page of your site. It just dilutes your on page optimisation efforts and forces Google to make a decision about what each page of your site is all about. If they choose not to index every page of your site as they have all the same page titles and their resources limit dictates every page is the same, then pages you want to get ranked for can be left swimming in the dark in cyberspace.

You could force Google to index more of your site by building more links to your product pages if you have an ecommerce site. But then you’re working harder as to more effectively and if you don’t address those new pages with unique titles Google may still not rank these pages for important search terms as they deem them to have little relevancy to the search query. Basically because you never told Google what exactly the page was about in the first place.

So why such a long post about page titles. Well the meta page title and the meta description title are probably the most important on page factors to address. The page title carries more weight than the description tag. Google even says they pay no attention to the keyord meta tag these days. So fix your page title and then add in the correct mixture of content that is both attractive to cusatomers and browsers and effective for the search engines, without pushing your keywords too much.
