Google could soon be incorporating social media inputs in a heavier way into it’s search results. If you want to know how important social media is to Google, watch this video interview here:
Google has tried before many times to be succesful with social media. They want to control this aspect of the web right inside their search engine browser. Recently they have announced the +1 button and they filed recent social media patents in Oct 2010. So can we expect to see Facebook status messages and tweets shared in it’s organic search listings in the future?
Well currently FaceBook won’t allow Google access to it’s data. It remains a competitor rather than a collaborator. But who knows maybe a deal will be done in the future. In my opinion it’s good that these too are competitors as one company controlling and manipulating all the pie isn’t always good for the consumer. It’s always nice to have a competitor and i suppose competition keeps you on your toes.
Although it is not clear what way they will incorporate this into their search results in the future, it is clear that social media is gaining more importance to them for developing their search engine results.
The +1 button will allow you to like a news story or website but it’s not clear how this will effect the ranking of websites or whether it will effect their positioning.
Google has been unsuccesful before with it’s social media platform Google buzz, but it’s clear they are threatened by FaceBook, and the strength of Twitter, plus they always want to be at the cutting edge of the internet. They have interests in the mobile search market and of course the social revolution, which can be clearly seen in their recent social media patents. And currently they have a bunch of social media buttons already in place in the Google toolbar, so thay aren’t afraid of allowing it’s users to bookmark a website they like on Reddit, Friend Feed, and Stumble Upon.
This is one development all internet bussiness with tactical marketing strategies in pace should watch with a keen eye.
